As much as Taylor Swift and Beyonce shut down award shows, the two superstars may be returning to the big screen with their concert films. This fall, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and Queen Bey will debut Renaissance: A Film By Beyonce will release.

Despite the huge anticipation for both movies, either will unlikely be up for an Oscar nomination. The reason has to do with the fact that neither movie will qualify as an Oscar-eligible documentary. The Academy’s current guidelines disqualify the two films.
This is not a ruling on the quality of the films, which are sure to be highly regarded by fans and critics alike. The problem is that they were not submitted for consideration before the October 2 deadline. Beyonce and Swift promoting their concert films in theaters could help bring Theatres back into the equation.
And though concert films aren’t new, how the two artists release theirs is potentially groundbreaking. Rather than going through traditional Hollywood studios, the pair struck deals with AMC theaters.
This arrangement puts more money straight into the hands of the performers. All while also providing a much-needed boost to the struggling multiplexes. More importantly, the Swift and Beyonce films will help reshape the way people think about concert films in the future.
Of course, given the criteria, neither film will win an Oscar, but this year’s category has for a surprise. For now, the only thing fans can do is to see how their favorites fare in the box office. Swifties will no doubt be rooting for Taylor.
Members in the Beyhive cult will, like always, support Beyonce. Whatever happens, there’s no doubt that both Taylor and Beyonce will leave a mark in 2024. Though they won’t land an Oscar, they’ll have made a huge impact on the music industry and the movie business.
