Over the years, festivals have become a main attraction within Hip-Hop culture, allowing fans to anticipate incredible artistry and performances during the Summer months out of the year. Artists also seem to fall in line with the climate of festival season, releasing full-length bodies of work not too shortly after announcing their next tour or festival appearance and sending fans fans into a world of debt behind cashing out on tickets & hotel stays.
Since maybe about 2013-14, a slew of new festival stages have sprouted and grown rapidly, including D.C.’s forefront week-long celebration, Broccoli City Festival. #BroccFest puts a spin on your average Hip-Hop festival, incorporating vital elements of health and education with their events, panels, and parties that lead up to the highly anticipated concert that takes place the last day of the event week.
Last year, the HF team was invited out for our first time as media and we had the opportunity to witness ground-breaking performances from artists like Solange, Rae Sremmurd, & Lil Yachty. We even had the chance to record a brief interview (which we’re still sitting on as unreleased footage) of Sir The Baptist, and connect with other like-minded media reps and tastemakers that poured into the Nation’s capital for the celebration.
Ultimately, the real importance of Broccoli City Festival lies in the growth of a platform built by young, black, determined entrepreneurs. In the last 6 years, people that look just like you & I have helped to contribute to the overall success of Broccoli City and Broccoli City Festival, and now it has become a marquee event for the Hip-Hop lovers of DC & the surrounding areas.
This year, the success of BC Fest was extremely evident because the festival has now been relocated to a larger arena. With over 30,000+ fans in attendance. Broccoli City Festival has grown from an observance of Earth Day to a necessary celebration of the people. The 2018 celebration was one that should have made day 1 concert goers proud to bear witness to, and we the team of HypeFresh Magazine are honored to say that we were in attendance, yet again.
