Cardi B did not hold back at all during her sit down interview with Vogue for their January 2020 cover issue. We all know Cardi is an open book and she hit all the nails on the head this time, with topics ranging from political affiliates, post-stripper life and her whirlwind relationship with husband, Offset.
The Bodak Yellow rapper is the definition of self-made. Cardi started at the New York Dolls strip club after getting fired from her job at the Amish Market for giving discounts. She’s openly expressed that she believes stripping saved her.
“At that time I just felt like my world was coming to an end. I was that teenager who was like, I don’t need nobody. But my boyfriend kept cheating on me. He and I used to get into arguments, hitting each other a lot. Girls like to say, ‘I will beat a nigga’s ass.’ I used to have that mentality. I used to hit my first boyfriend until he started hitting me back and it just got out of control. But I started stripping, and I made enough money to move out.” she says.
Cardi joined Bernie Sanders’ campaign and partnered to produce a video conversation between them, set in a nail salon in Detroit.
As a long-time Bernie supporter, the star has been very vocal on social media about her political standings. In August of 2019, she and Sanders’ produced a video in support of his running.
Cardi tells Vogue: “It’s like, why is this such a successful country and we don’t have Medicare for everyone? It’s like, how are people gonna work if they’re sick? People gonna fucking be paying forever. And we don’t have freaking free schools? That discourages people to want to go to school if you gotta pay for it.”
Being heavily active on social media, the singer seems to never give a second thought as to what other people think, but she admitted that after her reconcile with Offset, she was hurting.
“When me and my husband got into our issues—you know, he cheated and everything—and I decided to stay with him and work together with him, a lot of people were so mad at me; a lot of women felt disappointed in me,” Cardi says.
“My thing is, everybody on social media acts like relationships is perfect,” she added.
Even more, Cardi says she turned an unsuspecting corner after learning of her husband’s relationships with other women—she turned to her faith and claims it’s saved their marriage.
“I believe in forgiveness. I prayed on it. Me and my husband, we prayed on it. We had priests come to us. And we just came to an understanding like, bro, it’s really us against the world,” she says.
But Cardi is no holy-roller, she says she will always believe in monogamy and told Vogue. “I’ll beat your ass if you cheat on me.”
