    COVID 19: How The Times Are Affecting Mental Health In Children

    HEALTH IN CHILDRENMental health is on a decline in America due to the pandemic, especially among children. The novel Coronavirus better known as COVID-19, is signing its three year lease in its existence here among us. Though society is shifting to great lengths to accommodate the extreme changes, things are going for the worse. Since the onset of the pandemic, there are multiple strains of variants that is keeping the virus alive and well.

    According to Aljazeera, the first prevalent mutation, Delta variant, hit shores of the UK after first being identified in India last April. Summer, cases would drop significantly due to worldwide vaccinations. However, cases would rise again as more citizens refuse the vaccine.

    The end of 2021 is here and we are in one of the worst waves since the onset of the pandemic. Omicron, COVID 19’s latest variant is taking the world by storm. Here is how it is affecting our youth.

    COVID And How Children Cope Mentally

    Adults aren’t the only among the suffering, children are too. Children who know the times before COVID are having to relearn a way a life that is much different than now. Recess isn’t the same, or is the trip to go see grandma. According to KFF, studies predict that mental health disturbances will be more common among children of color and LGBTQ youth.

    More than 25% of high school students reported worsening mental health issues and a similar amount of reports among children 5 to 12. The aftermath of the disease plays a major role in child’s cognitive behavior, affecting studies and other aspects of the child’s life.

    According to UNICEF, almost 46,000 adolescents die by suicide each year. One out of every seven children has been directly impacted by lockdowns, and over 1.6 billion children have experienced some form of educational disruption. Sources claim that the disruption of normal day do day activities combined with worry of the future for themselves and family is taking quite the toll.
