Cyntoia Brown will be a free woman as of August 7.
The, now 30-year-old, woman will be able released from jail during the 2019 summer, after having already served 15 years behind bars. Brown was convicted as a teenager and tried as an adult.
In 2006, Brown was charged with a life sentence for killing a man, that she says paid to have sex with her.
At the age of 16, Brown killed Johnny Mitchell Allen. Allen was 43-years-old, and allegedly, the arrangement for Allen and Brown to have sex came from Brown’s ex. As it turns out, after Brown ran away from home, her ex, known as “Kut Throat,” pimped her out. Kut Throat had forced Brown into prostitution.
Brown says she feared for her life on the night she met Allen, which ultimately led to the shooting.
Since the case, many have argued that the sentence was too strict for a minor to receive. Since then, many have advocated for her freedom. In addition, many of those people have been celebrities, and people of power.
Amongst that group of people, are Rihanna, Meek Mill, Kim Kardashian, and LeBron James. There’s even been a 2011 documentary, highlighting Brown’s story. It was titled “Me Facing Life: The Cyntoia Brown Story.”
Brown will see a release in August, where she’ll remain on parole for 10 years. Governor Bill Haslam weighed in on his decision.
“This decision comes after careful consideration of what is a tragic and complex case,” Haslam said in a statement.
