Atlanta native Michael Render, better known by his stage name Killer Mike, has not released a solo record in over ten years. He returns with an epic release entitled “Run”. Unlike other artists, Killer Mike doesn’t have to release any more music ever again, for already cemented himself in hip-hop history for his contributions, but he has become even more famous for his activism in politics. Yet, Killer Mike’s “Run” demonstrates that his actions give the words more meaning.
Social Activist
The “Run The Jewels” founding member has always prioritized using his platform for a greater cause by helping make a change. He is highly vocal about social justice concerns that have deeply affected the black community, including police brutality and systemic racism. His community activism is impressively remarkable. His presence in politics leaves the door open to possibly participate in the Georgia governor race in the future.
Most recently, on the Fourth of July, he dropped his first new solo song since his 2012 studio album R.A.P. Music, titled “Run” featuring Young Thug and a monologue from comedian Dave Chappelle.
No Holding Back
It’s apparent that Mike wanted to make a powerful statement with his art. He certainly accomplished that with his new release and accompanying war-themed video.
It starts with an introductory monologue by Chappelle that inspired the concept of the Adrian Villagomez-directed video. The controversial comedian discusses the parallels of the black plight to being a trooper on the battlefield, who has no choice but to fight if they want to survive and withstand similar to the hate and oppression black people face on a daily basis.
“I wanted this video to be representative that there’s a fight, the spiritual fight, that’s going on every single day with us,” Mike said.
When speaking about Black people fighting, you can’t forget about Young Thug who is currently fighting legal charges from a recent indictment. In fact, he is seemingly absent from this video due to his circumstances. Mike made sure to pay homage to the wounded rapper, with a flag that says “Free YSL”, dedicated to the tragic turn of events.
