History Making “Death of a Salesman” On Broadway This Fall

Arthur Miller’s famed play Death of a Salesman makes its return to Broadway this fall. The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama will star actors Sharon D. Clarke and Wendell Pierce. Clarke is currently nominated for a Tony for her work this season on Caroline, Or Change. Pierce is known for his work on the hit series The Wire.

Furthermore, the Broadway revival will be directed by Miranda Cromwell. Cromwell, along with Marianne Elliott, won the 2020 Olivier Award for the Young Vic/West End production of Miller’s play in London.

André De Shields, Khris Davis Round Out the Cast

In addition to Clarke and Pierce reviving their roles as Linda and Willy Lohman, respectively, two new supporting actors round out the cast. Namely, Obie and Drama Desk Award-winning actor Khris Davis as well as Broadway legend André De Shields, fresh off of his run as Hermes in Hadestown.

Additionally, according to a press release cited by Variety, this compelling adaptation of Miller’s timeless play reveals the hidden flaws within the American Dream and its uncertain pledge of fairness and potential for everyone.

This American classic by Arthur Miller originally premiered on Broadway in 1949. The original production was helmed by director Elia Kazan. Its most recent of four subsequent revivals premiered in 2012. It featured Philip Seymour Hoffman, Linda Emond, Andrew Garfield and Finn Wittrock.

    Making History

Cromwell’s production will be the first Broadway production to feature this classic story from the perspective of a Black family. Three of the previous four revivals won the Tony Award for Best Revival. The reception of these revivals, therefore, bodes well for the success of the upcoming West End transfer. Especially considering Clarke’s Olivier win and Pierce’s nomination for their work on these characters.
