Unfortunately, Houston Texans rookie WR John Metchie III was diagnosed with Leukemia and is forced to sit out for the remainder of his rookie year. While he was highly anticipated to help out the Texans he must prioritize his health. One may assume that Metchie is disappointed in the series of events that recently occurred. However, he’s in the process of pivoting and is very satisfied with his medical treatment and how the team is going about his recovery process. Metchie released a statement to the Houston Texans, ESPN reported.
“In a recent statement, I revealed that I have been diagnosed with APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia), which is highly treatable,” Metchie shared.
The Houston Texans shared a tweet stating that they are receiving great medical care, staying positive, and looking forward to a future recovery. Due to this diagnosis, it is unlikely that I will be playing football this season. I will prioritize my health and well-being. Thank you in advance for your support and good wishes. I’m excited to return even stronger. God bless.

Texans’ Future Plans with John Metchie III
Naturally, the Texans placed the Alabama University star WR on the active/non-football illness list. Many were hoping to see his immediate impact on the field, especially the Texans. In fact, they traded up in the second round to select Metchie 44th overall in this year’s NFL draft. The Texans ultimately traded up with the Cleveland Browns, sending three draft picks.
At Alabama, Metchie recorded 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He later tore his ACL in the SEC Championship. Even with the injury the Texans still took a chance on him and they expected him to be ready for training camp. However, the saddening news hit the Internet and many have come out in support hoping that he recovers from this ferocious disease and is able to do what he loves to do.
Alabama HC Nick Saban released a statement on behalf of Metchie’s illness this past Sunday. He openly came out in support and stated:
“John has faced every challenge head-on with strength and resolve, and we fully support him in his battle against Leukemia.”
