The hip-hop world is going mad right now! Kendrick Lamar sparked fresh, vicious reactions toward what he said was a direct assault on J. Cole when he spewed a verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s album. The “big three” debate, regularly eclipsed during the normal seasons, was then revived. Lamar’s verse aimed not just smack but also the concept itself, landing flatly in the solo lane with a promotion.
Kendrick: F the Big 3, it’s just Big Me!
Cole: Your last album was trash, come out of hiding midget!

But J. Cole was not going to keep quiet. He also released his surprise album, Might Delete Later, with “7 Minute Drill” as a diss track. The most intriguing aspect of the song is that Cole makes a dig right back at Lamar‘s diss. Cole raps, “You want some attention? It comes with extensions.” He even referenced Lamar’s “The Heart” series, hinting that Lamar’s best work comes from targeting others.

Fans’ reactions were pretty varied. Some took issue with the way J. Cole went about things, feeling that he was playing it too safe; if even more interesting discussions sprouted from that, such as “what even is a diss track? Can you actually go bar for bar with somebody while also respecting them?”
It remains unclear whether this is a case of a fractured friendship or simply another chapter in the never-ending saga of hip-hop royalty. What is absolutely certain is that this has everyone’s attention and that the potential rivalry between J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar is a continuous spectacle.
