Bruno Mars, Jason Momoa and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson are standing with their fellow brothers and sisters in Hawaii to stop a telescope from being built on sacred land.
The two actors and the singer are with the many people of Hawaii who want plans for construction to come to a stop. For weeks there have been ongoing protests near Hawaii’s Mauna Kea. On Wednesday, both Bruno and Jason each showed their support against the thirty-meter telescope coming to the island.
Though Bruno did not show his support in person, he did post a message to Instagram. Here it is:
“I love you Hawaii, and I’m with you. #protectmaunakea”
Page Six reports that Jason came on Wednesday to present the ho’okupu, or “formal offering wrapped in ti leaf.” He’s been vocal on the TMT for weeks now. Here’s a little of what he said:
“I just want to say that I’m thankful to the protectors and the stewards of this land, and we are not going anywhere.”
As well as:
“KAPU ALOHA. Finally with my people. So many things to come. We are United We are Mauna Kea Aloha nui j”
Jason, The Rock and Bruno all have Hawaiin roots. They’ve all spent time on the island as children, and view the Thirty-meter Telescope as a tool to kill to their people’s history.
See what The Rock had to say:
“At the heart of any matter, is where the truth lies.
Truth is, these people – our people – are the backbone and spirit of Hawaii and our culture. They are willing to die here to protect this very sacred land we stand on.
This is not about stopping the progress of science. I’ll always be an advocate for science advancement, but not at the expense of human beings who are hurting.
When we lead with empathy, we make progress thru humanity.
I remain optimistic our leaders will do right by the people.
Because in the end, that’s really the only thing that matters – people.
#MaunaKea”
For now, due to all the support and protests, plans for construction have been pushed back to September 2021 by Gov. Dave Ige.
