NLE Choppa Promises to End Hip Hop’s Billboard No. 1 Single Drought

The rap world has seen its share of tragedies in 2023, but the genre is still struggling to find a way to top the charts. Until last week, the Billboard 200 had been dry of a rap album since Lil Uzi Vert’s Pink Tape topped the tally in February. After a slow start to the year, a Memphis rapper may have just broken that drought.

    NLE Choppa’s Bold Accusations

Bryson Potts, known professionally as NLE Choppa, is a rising rapper from the city of Memphis. His 2019 single “Shotta Flow” achieved lasting fame, going platinum and hitting the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. The track also gave rise to an even more provocative remix featuring the St. Louis artist, Sexyy Red.

He followed that success with a debut EP, Cottonwood, and the sophomore effort, Cottonwood 2. His latest single, “Slut Me Out,” is an aggressive, sexually explicit banger that has been making waves on TikTok’s music chart and streaming platforms. It’s also certified platinum single in the US and has climbed to the top 15 on Spotify’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The record has earned a hefty amount of radio airplay and features a guest appearance from Lil Wayne, who invited Choppa to perform it at his Boston date on his Welcome to Tha Carter Tour.

While the single is gaining momentum, Choppa has already set his sights on breaking a bigger milestone. He wants to be the first rap artist to have an EP and two albums go No. 1 simultaneously on the Billboard 200 chart.
