Sam Smith Admits That He Identifies As Gender Nonbinary

Sam Smith admits that he doesn’t see himself as a man or a woman.

In an interview with Jameela Jamil, featured on her I Weigh Interviews talk show, Smith relives his experience of trying to confirm– both as a child and as an adult. It isn’t until he was much older, that Smith says he realized what box he wanted to check. It was neither the box marked “male” or the box that read “female.” Instead, Smith relates closely to the option of gender nonbinary, or genderqueer.

Gender nonbinary means that you do not identify as a gender. Instead, it means you are somewhere in the middle of both–something that Smith feels strongly about.

“I’ve always been very free in terms of thinking about sexuality, so I’ve just tried to change that into my thoughts on gender as well.”

“That’s how I take it: I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum.”

BuzzFeed News reports that the interview took place on Friday, and is the first time that SS has been honest about his gender identity. The publication also states that SS credits this moment of honesty to the many other nonbinary individuals he learned from–because he had no idea gender nonbinary existed.
