Recently, Meek Mill was sentenced from two to four years in state prison for violating his probation and popping wheelies on his dirt bike in New York City. A lot of people have voiced their support for Meek, such as Rick Ross, Jay Z, T.I., James Harden and plenty of others who felt as though he was unjustly arrested.
Before deciding whether his arrest was unjust or not, here’s a timeline of Meek’s legal history.
Back in 2008, when he was 18 years old, Meek was arrested for gun possession for eight months and placed on a five-year probation.
Then, in 2012, Meek was arrested for not allowing police to search his car after they smelled marijuana for it.
In 2014, Meek was then placed in jail for six months because he violated probation by booking shows outside of Philadelphia without letting the judge know ahead of time. He was then told his parole would be over if he passed his etiquette classes that he was supposed to take, which he didn’t.
In 2016, he violated probation by not only giving the judge a cold cup of water when he was supposed to send in a urine test, but he also went out to an award show with his girlfriend at the time, Nicki Minaj, without letting the judge know ahead of time. For that, he was sentenced to 90 days in house arrest and to complete community service, which he didn’t.
Earlier in 2017, he was involved in a fight at an airport, which left him charged with misdemeanor assault, which was eventually dropped.
Now, even with all of those legal troubles coming before this recent arrest, should he have been arrested and sentenced to a few years in prison?
In my opinion, two to four years in state prison is a bit excessive for the actual crime that he was convicted of, but I realize that all of this is his legal past coming back up to him. He kept violating probation, missing out on opportunities, and putting himself in situations that he knew weren’t allowed under his conditions.
Not only that, but after the judge did give him chances with his gun and drug charges to stay out of prison, which would have been about five years altogether on average, the judge acknowledged that he called her and his D.A. out in a song, disrespectfully.
In fact, on an episode of Everyday Struggle, DJ Akademiks said that he spoke to Philadelphia residents who said that they didn’t feel sorry for Meek, because if they had done the exact same thing as him, they would’ve been thrown inside of jail without a second thought.
One of the big things that helped him out was the fact that he was helping other people sustain their living through the money that he’s making as an entertainer.
While that is admirable, the legal system still catches up to anybody eventually if you keep breaking the law and the rules of your probation.
How do you guys feel about Meek’s sentencing? It’s an awful situation for somebody who has a lot of promise as a rapper and was positively impacting the lives of people around him, but it’s what happens when you don’t live clean after getting chances to keep your freedom. Hopefully he has a turnaround like Gucci Mane and comes out to be better and stronger than ever before.
