Less than 48 hours after causing an uproar for dancing half-naked in public at a Lakers game, Time Magazine has crowned Lizzo Entertainer of the Year.
Known for her positive tone and self-empowering, catchy lyrics, Lizzo is the most nominated artist for the 2020 Grammy Awards, with eight nominations including best album and best song of the year.
On top of that, she saw various nominations for the Teen Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards. MTV’s VMA’s, AMA’s and BET Hip-Hop Awards for best new artist, song, and album of the year.
But the singer-rapper, flute-playing songwriter has been in the game long before she catapulted to fame this year. Arguably one of her biggest hits, “Truth Hurts” has been out for two years before it initially got any attention.
“I’ve been doing positive music for a long-ass time,” she told Time Magazine.
So with all this recent success, you might be wondering what took her so long to become relevant?
Lizzo explains, “—the culture changed. There were a lot of things that weren’t popular but existed, like body positivity, which at first was a form of protest for fat bodies and black women and has now become a trendy, commercialized thing. Now I’ve seen it reach the mainstream. Suddenly I’m mainstream!”
Since her fast rise to fame, she’s already had featured covers with British Vogue, Elle, Billboard, Allure, The Cut magazines.
It’s hard to believe that someone who was at one time broke, sleeping in her car, has enough hope to stay positive and continue to radiate positivity.
The year of 2019 has revealed a lot of new talent. Although Time Magazine’s editors ultimately decided top annual features. The public has an opportunity to weigh in via online polls posted by the publication.
