26th Birthday
Zendaya, the notable actress, singer, and receiver of various accolades, turned 26 yesterday. The actress spent her birthday with family and friends and answering the many birthday messages she received. Her acting career took off from her first job on Disney Channel’s “Shake It up” to her leading role in “Spider Man” and the very popular show “Euphoria”. Rarely do Disney Channel stars drastically change the course of their work. The actress/singer has adapted to a variety of acting roles demonstrating her versatility.
Overcoming Adversity
Like many Disney channel stars, Zendaya took up singing during her time at “Shake It Up” even coming out with her own album in 2013. Since then, the singer has appeared on various Euphoria songs with Labyrinth, including “Still Don’t Know My Name” and, “I’m Tired.” As a Black woman, Zendaya transformed her industry by dominating leading roles and breaking down barriers. Her work spans over various platforms and over a plethora of roles.
Entering the industry as a young Black woman, Zendaya has touched on the adversity she has faced in her industry. Her role on the show “Shake It Up” exposed her to a new world of challenges. According to Enews, in an interview, Zendaya touched on how being a Black role model in her industry affects her. She expressed the significance of acknowledging that there are other Black girls in the industry, as they have been wrongly portrayed as the only representation. It’s crucial to create an open discussion that welcomes other Black women, even those who don’t share the same physical appearance.
Colorism
Comparison in the acting industry is prevalent and commonly persists through colorism. Zendaya has stated on multiple occasions that she is compared to other light-skinned actresses. Recently, the actress was publicly compared to actress Keke Palmer. Palmer slapped back at these comparisons stating “I am incomparable.”
