Skydiver Luigi Cani dropped 100 million tree seeds over the Amazon rainforest to fight deforestation. This breathtaking stunt occurred in January 2023 near Novo Aripuanã, Brazil, with seeds released from 6,500 feet above the ground. The goal? To help restore a damaged section of one of the world’s most vital ecosystems.
This innovative reforestation project is one of the largest strides against continued Amazon tree loss. With nearly 17% of the rainforest destroyed in the past 50 years alone, efforts like this one provide hope for restoration. With 11 world records and 22-plus years of skydiving experience, Cani has earned the nickname “The Germinator” for his forceful environmental campaign.
The Amazon rainforest is also accountable for producing oxygen and supporting global diversity. Cani’s stunt is not solely for entertainment purposes; it’s also a call for action. By planting seeds of 27 local species, the project can potentially start the forest’s natural rebirth, ensure carbon storage, and offer shelter for hundreds of plants and animals.
The journey to pull off this ambitious project was far from easy. It took five years of careful planning, including obtaining 12 legal permits from the Brazilian government. Cani and his team designed a biodegradable seedbox to hold the 100 million seeds, ensuring they suited the local environment. He relied on wind patterns to spread the seeds evenly across the target area during the jump.
Reflecting on his shift from adrenaline junkie to conservationist, Cani shared his motivation:
“I don’t have that drive for danger anymore. I want to do something to help.”
The jump itself tested his resolve. He called it his most intense yet, nearly breaking his wrist and fingers while steadying the seedbox at 6,000 feet to ensure a perfect release.
Experts predict a 95% germination rate for the seeds, which could grow into trees reaching up to 50 meters tall. Satellite monitoring will track the project’s progress. These findings could shape the future of aerial reforestation techniques.
Cani isn’t stopping with the Amazon. He’s already planning another jump to tackle ocean plastic, showing his commitment to tackling environmental issues on multiple fronts.
