Michael Jordan continues to leave his mark well beyond the basketball court. On February 19, 2025, Jordan opened his fourth North Carolina medical clinic, cementing his commitment to providing quality medical care to the underserved. The new Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic, located at 416 N. 30th St. in Wilmington, is a beacon of hope for those without proper medical insurance or those who are hampered by financial and logistical hurdles to receiving medical care.
The new center, measuring 7,300 square feet, has 12 patient rooms and operates on weekdays. Primary care services are offered to patients, with community health workers who make sure that patients are connected with local services that they may need. The new facility, constructed in partnership with Novant Health, bridges the gap in healthcare provision, something that Jordan has campaigned for years.
Jordan’s healthcare philanthropy began in 2019 with the establishment of two Charlotte clinics. Their rapid and impactful success led him to gift $10 million to Novant Health in 2024 to expand those vital community assets. The new Wilmington clinic, opened less than a year ago, served nearly 1,800 patients in its first nine months, many who had never had primary care previously.
This cause speaks personally to Jordan because Wilmington is his hometown where he spent his formative years, and his ongoing work in the city speaks to his commitment to giving back to his community.
“It’s rewarding to see that in less than a year, the first Wilmington clinic has already had a substantial effect on the health and wellness of individuals and families in my hometown,” Jordan said. “Returning to Wilmington last year to mark the opening of our first clinic was incredibly moving, and it reinforced the importance that I put on having quality health care available in the community.”
This new clinic has the goal to transcend system-wide healthcare hurdles, notably the weight of cost and transportation, so that patients are able to access the care that they need without undue burden.
The new facility’s opening marks another success in Jordan’s healthcare mission. Ernie Bovio, president, Novant Health Coastal Region, expressed gratitude to Jordan for his continued support. “We are immensely grateful to Michael Jordan for his vision and generosity in bringing these two clinics to life in our community,” Bovio stated. “Through his philanthropic partnership, the new clinic on Greenfield Street last year saw nearly 1,800 patients in its first nine months.”
The success of the Charlotte clinics, which provided many patients with their first-ever primary care visit, says a lot about the success of this model. Locating the clinics in those places where healthcare accessibility has historically been an issue, Jordan and Novant Health are transforming lives, one patient at a time.
Jordan’s commitment to making healthcare more accessible is something that other philanthropic efforts throughout the country should be modeled after. His continued investment in the medical system in North Carolina indicates a broader intention to close gaps in medical accessibility and provide quality care to all, insured or not, at all levels of income.
