Obama talks racial anxiety and Trump support
Obama has a new memoir that will be released next week. Unlike in the past, Obama is becoming more vocal in addressing Trump support.
Millions of Americans, especially record numbers of Blacks voted for Obama both terms. Afterwards, many of Obama’s former supporters went on to criticize his actions.
Research on growing Trump support
A survey in 2017 published by Public Religion Research Institute, almost half of working-class white voters expressed fear. Living in a country that had a two-year Black president made them worry that America was losing its culture.
Early on in his campaign, Trump made it clear that he was going to put America first. He then proved that his personal desires are more important. It is apparent that rappers and Black men as a whole are drawn to Trump because he is about action.
Obama expressed his perspective, on the criticism he faced by stating;
“It felt like my mere existence, within the White House had caused an unease as if the established balance had been thrown off.” Donald Trump pushed the false claim that I wasn’t born in the US to fuel racial anxiety among millions of Americans who were uncomfortable with a Black president.
Obama is not like other American presidents
It is crucial that Obama gets the credit he deserves for handling racists. Though he has not shared his views publicly before, his stance on racism is different than that of any other president. One reason is because no other president endured the same level of disrespect as a result of his background before.
If Obama hasn’t done anything else, he finds ways to challenge Americans’ way of thinking. Racism will remain intact until white Americans truly accept and shift their mindsets.
