Black History Month is an officially recognized celebration that commemorates the remarkable contributions made by African Americans to our nation. Including Black celebrities who pave the way for future generations to come. Like actress Viola Davis who is now an EGOT, Beyonce, who won the most Grammys of all time, and LeBron James, who is breaking records.
Viola Davis becomes an EGOT.
After winning a Grammy for her audiobook of her memoir Finding Me, Viola Davis has become the 18th person to achieve the coveted EGOT award. The EGOT title is bestowed upon actors, musicians, and entertainers who have achieved the remarkable feat of winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony during their illustrious careers.
Davis, 57, is the third Black woman to earn EGOT status after Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson. She has already won two Tony Awards for King Hedley II and Fences. She not only achieved an Emmy win for her remarkable depiction of Annalise Keating in “How to Get Away with Murder” but also earned an Oscar for her exceptional performance in the film “Fences.”
EGOT is a rare accomplishment; only 18 people have been awarded the honor, including Barbra Streisand and Liza Minnelli. Several other actors, musicians, and entertainers are aiming to join the EGOT club, including Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda, Australian Hugh Jackman, and Jamie Foxx.
During her acceptance speech, Davis said she was “truly amazed and grateful” to be an EGOT. She added: “To be able to call myself an EGOT is the most incredible honor in the world.”
Beyonce becomes the most Grammy winningest artist of all time.
Beyonce made history on Sunday evening by becoming the most Grammy winningest artist of all time. Her 32 wins surpassed the late classical conductor Georg Solti, who amassed 31 Grammys between 1963 and 1998.
The superstar singer-songwriter capped off her night with four wins for her “Renaissance” album and the song “Cuff It.” She also won awards for best dance/electronic music album and traditional R&B performance.
Her other three wins came from her song, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” She was nominated for album and record of the year but missed out on the latter.
The Academy loves rock and roll, and it seems to like Beyonce for her a-cappella singing but not so much for her dance moves.
She has 88 nominations over the past 20 years, which ties her with Jay-Z. That number is just a fraction of her total wins, so it was pretty disappointing to see her lose the big three, and it’s another reminder that she’s not getting the respect she deserves from the Academy.
She could have won more than just one award if she’d been nominated in the general field, and this is something that she needs to fix in the future. There’s so much more to her career than just songs, and she deserves recognition.
LeBron James breaks Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
On Tuesday, LeBron James passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. He did so in a Los Angeles Lakers game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
It’s a record most felt could never be topped. A record that encapsulates so much of what made LeBron James the greatest player ever.
The record reflects his talent, his tireless work, and fortuitous longevity. It also embodies his approach to scoring. He’s never been a pass-first scorer; instead, he found ways to get to the basket and put the ball in it.
He’s also always been a finisher at the rim, something that’s been crucial to his greatness. It’s a combination that has led to countless clutch moments in the NBA and helped him lead the league in scoring multiple times.
The moment was a whirlwind, with James’ family and teammates joining him on the court to watch as he took a fadeaway jumper with 10.9 seconds left to break Abdul-Jabbar’s record. The crowd celebrated him, and NBA commissioner Adam Silver congratulated him on the historic occasion.
