Bronx Drill Rapper Nay Benz and Crew Busted: 176 Charges in Massive NYPD Gang Sweep

Nay Benz, a prominent Bronx drill rapper, along with members of the Slattery Gang (also known as “Slaughtery”), was arrested in a significant NYPD operation that resulted in a 176-count conspiracy indictment. This operation, conducted by the NYPD’s Gun Violence Suppression Division, targeted gang members believed to be involved in numerous violent crimes, including shootings and attempted murders.

An 18-year-old drill rapper known by her real name, Nadine Asamoah, but more popularly as Nay Benz was seen as the mastermind behind the Slattery Gang, which Police Commissioner Kevin Thomas said committed a slew of violent crimes in the Fordham section of the Bronx. Nay Benz stands out in the drill music scene not only for her music but also for her unique attributes, including her age, gender, and a missing finger, which have made her a notable figure both in the community and in law enforcement’s eyes

On July 31, 2024, the NYPD Gun Violence Suppression Division arrested Nay Benz and other gang members following a yearlong investigation that targeted their activities. It had been devised to break up the gang responsible for a spate of shootings and cases of violence sprawling over the Bronx. The gangs have been involved in reckless gunfire, including opening fire in areas near children and playgrounds. The ages of those arrested vary between 20 and more, indicating that those involved are very young.

According to NYPD Assistant Chief Jason Savino, “They’ve pulled the trigger more than once,” adding that the gang members seemed to be “competing with each other to see who could shoot more times.” This makes the violence attributed to them all the more alarming.

No specific reports indicate that there were any injuries during the arrests of Nay Benz and various Slattery Gang members. Described as a pre-dawn manhunt, some suspects verbally protested their innocence, but there have been no details suggesting that any physical confrontations occurred, which would lead to injuries for either the suspects or the police officers involved.

The NYPD operation to apprehend Nay Benz and gangsters of the Slattery Gang ran into some form of protest and defiance from the suspects. As they were being taken into custody, it was reported that some gang members expressed their innocence through profanity-laced tirades. On being asked whether they had pulled any triggers in committing acts of violence, one of them responded provocatively: “I don’t pull no triggers. The only thing I pull is your mother.”

The NYPD pointed out the consequences of the gang activities upon the community. Maybe one of the most disturbing incidents was when a 9-year-old boy called 911 after finding himself caught in the line of fire during a gang-related shooting. This seemed to ruffle some strong feathers within the police, especially when officials mentioned that there were children around who had been left vulnerable. Detective Edelman said, “A 9-year-old boy is calling because he is put in the line of fire in a schoolyard,” which leaves an interpretation of the dangerous environment created because of gang activity.

Nay Benz has just released a new single, “Jail Freestyle.” It is her first since her release from jail on March 13, 2024. Much as it reflects her first comeback into the music scene, it clearly shows her undying signature style—with an upbeat flow over just a straightforward beat. The release was well explained to mean something reminiscent of New York drill times before things started going commercial.

Although there has been no concrete announcement regarding plans or albums in the future, this activity recently shows that she intends to pursue a musical career after facing legal troubles. With her rising profile within the drill rap scene, this will likely not be the last people hear of her as she seeks further establishment in the industry.
