Camila Cabello has come under fire following the release of her latest single, “I Luv It,” with some fans commenting that she now sounds a lot like Charli XCX’s style of hyperpop. The accusations blew up on social media, pitting them against each other in the music community.
Everything started when the fresh ears of listeners picked up extreme similarities to Charli XCX’s idiosyncratic sound in “I Luv It.” Charli has lent her name to hyperpop—energetic, experimental—for years. To some fans, then, Camila’s new track sounded a little too familiar with this, therefore accusing her of taking from Charli’s work.
In an interview with The Independent, Camila responded clearly to these allegations. She expressed what had been in her mind, thus saying,
“What I was worried about was the relationship between me and [Charli].”
This statement showed that what crossed her mind was maintaining her friendship with Charli amidst all that drama.
She also made clear that the accusations didn’t affect her at all. She took such comparisons quite positively.
“I love Charli, and Charli’s music, so I think it’s a huge compliment. Charli loves me so that everybody can f*ck off,”
she said. Her answer didn’t only discard negativity but also showed admiration for Charli.
Back in May, Camila surprised her fans by revealing a new mane of blonde hair and previewing her latest single, “I Luv It,” featuring an ultra-new look and sound, worlds away from anything she has done before, begging for Charli XCX comparisons.
Even with all the accusations, Camila is still a massive fan of Charli’s work. She posts it openly and refines that she takes this comparison as flattery rather than insults.
“I love Charli, and I love Charli’s music,”
Camila clarified, emphasizing the supportive nature of her comments.
Another layer of the story is that the producer behind “I Luv It” claims to have been influenced by rap, among other things, when working on the song. In light of those revelations, this would only confirm that the musical inspiration for the track came from diverse sources, amongst them not necessarily being hyperpop. It only underscores the kind and diversity of influences that go into molding a song.
The thing is that Charli XCX responded to this controversy most playfully and supportively. She went on Twitter and posted with humor,
“iluvit iluvit iluvit iluvit!”.
That was light-hearted, showing she did not care but supported Camila.
The relationship between Camila and Charli was founded on a history of collaboration and mutual respect—they co-penned songs and covered for each other during tours. It has, therefore, been strong over time, seeming not to be affected by the comparisons and accusations at hand.
