Florida International University (FIU) Goes Through an Evacuation
On the morning of May 3rd, 2023, chaos erupted at Florida International University (FIU) as an evacuation was triggered by a false report of an active shooter on campus. The incident left many students and faculty members shaken and raised concerns about the safety and security of university campuses.
According to reports, a student who called the university’s emergency services hotline made false information about an active shooter. The caller claimed to have seen a shooter on campus. Therefore, swift response from campus police and the activation of FIU’s emergency alert system.
Students and faculty members were then instructed to evacuate the campus immediately and seek shelter off-campus. Many buildings were placed on lockdown. Also, law enforcement agencies from the local area were called in to assist with the response.
Thankfully, after a thorough search of the campus, it was proven that there was no active shooter on the premises. The false report was deemed a hoax, and the university was given the all-clear to resume normal operations.
Following the incident, FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg issued a statement to convey his appreciation for the swift action taken by law enforcement and campus security personnel.
An update from FIU Alert: This morning, @FIUPOLICE received reports of an active shooter in AHC 3. The building has been cleared by officers, and a systematic search is currently underway.
There is no threat to anyone on campus.
The call appears to be false.

The incident at FIU is a sobering reminder of the potential dangers on university campuses. While false reports of active shooters are rare, they can have serious consequences, including panic and fear among students and faculty members. As such, universities and colleges must take steps to ensure the safety and security of their campuses, including implementing emergency preparedness plans and providing training to staff and students on how to respond to potential threats.
