Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields speaks about how he will be transforming his mindset going into year two. Justin Fields admits he feels a bit different about being uncertain of his starting spot at QB for the Chicago Bears.
“I feel great having this mindset,” Fields expressed. “It’s definitely a shift from last year, so I’m prepared to take on the role and guide both the offense and the team.”
The Bears hosted a three-day voluntarily camp, according to ESPN, that primarily the Bears’ offense attended. Former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles was the only one who didn’t show up. However, the GM Ryan Poles openly discuss that team has been working on trading Foles within the last month or so. One may see how this would cause a rift in the relationship between Foles in the organization going forward. In other words, Foles not appearing at the voluntarily training camp should come as no surprise.
While the Bears weren’t great last season, there have been spurts and highlights of potential for Fields. Bears’ head coach Matt Eberflus was impressed with how Fields commanded the offense and demanded respect amongst his teammates. Eberflus noticed he’s been working in the offseason, as he notes that his footwork begins to look cleaner as he goes through his progressions.
“I thought he did an excellent job today,” Eberflus said. “He did great. He commanded the offense, every play I saw. Sure, there were some small mistakes by others, but overall, he had excellent command today.”
Justin Fields Reflects on His Rookie Season
The uncertainty ate him up last season, Fields admits. Being drafted No.11 overall in 2021, he expected to be a starter. However, once he arrived the Bears looked to develop the rookie more. He took on his role of backing up Andy Dalton, yet, he believed he can contribute and help the team more. He seems determined to become a starter and is looking to embrace the opportunity.
“Last year was my rookie season, my first in the league. I was unsure about starting or playing at that time, so my mindset now is completely different from last year,” Fields explained. “I’m just thrilled to begin.”
It seems Field’s confidence is a bit contagious and affecting everyone within that lockerroom. Coach Eberflus speaks highly of his confidence and believes he’s the right guy to be leading their team in 2022.
“He’s got a really good confidence in the room,” Eberflus said. “When I’m in the quarterback room, when I’m in the offensive room, [he’s] calling out the plays, executing and then what the adjustments are if we may have that for that particular play.”
