18-year-old Chicago rapper, Lil Scoom89, Real Scoom, was shot to death on July 8, 2024. The popular young artist turned into a victim of gunfire in the Chatham neighborhood area on the South Side at the intersection of 89th Place and Langley Avenue.
At around 11:50 in the evening, Lil Scoom89 together with his friend, 16, had a verbal altercation with another person on the street.
This conflict went up in their faces, and shots rang out. Lil Scoom89 was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where, despite the best efforts of the medical team, his many injuries proved too serious in the end. The 16-year-old, meanwhile, is expected to recover physically but no doubt faces a long emotional journey.
Indeed, the news about the shooting shocked and saddened many of his fans, not forgetting the community at large. Partly because Lil Scoom89 lived to be remembered for his greatness in music, along with a dynamic personality and nature that seemed to urge him on toward making more music. A lot, leaving behind and will be left to mourn this great loss, by his family. A GoFundMe page has so far put up for people to contribute towards the costs for the funeral, among other forms of support needed during this trying time for his family.
At the time, Lil Scoom89 was starting to fashion out a huge existence in Chicago rap. With raw lyrics and energized performances, he was building slowly on his fan base, having to put out various tracks previously that really clicked with many people. His features with other local artists showed his versatility and dedication in the music field.
The Chicago Police Department has called for renewed efforts to take street violence head-on and ensure community safety. The authorities reiterated the importance of community cooperation in bringing criminals to justice and prevention of further acts of violence in a statement recently issued.
“We need the help of the community,”
said Officer Martinez.
“Together we can make our streets a whole lot safer, work for justice for victims like Lil Scoom89.”
Community support for Lil Scoom89’s family at this hour has been overwhelming. In their GoFundMe page, the family extends appreciation and shares even more about the life and legacy their only son left behind.
“He was more than just a rapper; he was our heart,”
his mother said in an interview with ABC News.
“We hope for justice, that he’s remembered for all the joy and love he brought into our lives.”
