Cleveland Browns Baker Mayfield Not Phased By Cyber Death Threats

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield seemed unfazed for him and his wife to be receiving death threats on social media, per ESPN. Mayfield emphasized that the matter was “not that serious” and “not anything new for us.”

Mayfield has performed at an all-time low since the releasing of Pro Bowl receiver Odell Beckham Jr.. He threw four interceptions in Saturday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers, ultimately, jeopardizing the Browns playoff hopes. Emily Mayfield, the wife of the individual in question took to Instagram to share that she has unfortunately been subjected to disturbing death threats aimed at her husband.

“It’s unbelievable how social media magnifies negativity,” Emily Mayfield expressed in an Instagram story. “I still have faith that there are more good people than bad, but social media often challenges that belief. That’s why I strive to promote positivity. Our world needs it.”

“The death threats, lies about my husband, and complete lack of respect always leave me astounded.”

“I pray for those who entertain such thoughts, whether silently or in writing. May you discover your own happiness instead of seeking to take it away from others.”

Mayfield’s focus is the Cleveland Browns making the playoffs

After Thursday’s practice, the media asked Mayfield about his wife’s post. While he is disappointed in the responses his wife received, he is not surprised by any metric. As matter of fact, he emphasizes he has previous experiences with this matter.

“It’s tough for me to advise against paying attention to it because I’ve had my fair share of hearing external opinions. Dealing with it can be incredibly difficult, especially when it concerns someone you deeply care about,” Mayfield expressed. “She can’t change the game’s outcomes in any way. It’s just a reality of the world we live in today, where there are many online critics who make empty threats and target individuals who aren’t directly involved in football, which is frankly ignorant.”

“When people talk about suicide, murder, or anything like that, it just shows their ignorance. But I don’t pay attention to them because they’re not the kind of people I would listen to, whether it’s positive or negative.”

Mayfield explained to the media, having this kind of mindset helps him prioritize and put things in the proper context.

“It’s hard to tell your loved ones and family not to defend you and get involved in that. It’s just how people naturally react,” Mayfield expressed. “You have to take it day by day and remember that the opinions that truly matter are from your priorities and the people who are important to you. It has become a bigger issue than it actually is on the outside.”
