Danny Trejo Gets into a Brawl and Knocked Out Over a Water Balloon

The annual Fourth of July parade in Los Angeles went from a picture-perfect American scene right out of Norman Rockwell to something straight off the set of Hollywood when actor Danny Trejo found himself stuck smack dab in a mid-parade incident.

The 80-year-old has portrayed tough-guy characters in films like Machete, and rode through the Sunland-Tujunga route in patriotic spirits while waving his arms at onlookers from a classic convertible. What had been a party quickly devolved into battle when an errant water balloon, released from the hands of an unknown assailant whistling through the air, hit Trejo’s classic vehicle with a wet slap.

What had come across as innocent mischief soon became an unexpectedly heated exchange. Video from bystanders that was posted online within hours showed Trejo leave the car and walk with purpose toward a group of people on the sidewalk. What follows reads like the script from a B-movie fight scene. Tensions boiled over, with Trejo said to have delivered a punch and briefly lost his footing himself. The scene soon turned ugly with an action that would give everyone from Machete himself furrow their brows as a pissed off Trejo hurled the lawn chair directly at the group of witnesses.

That was followed by bystanders preventing the situation from imploding even more. The last-minute scuffle over in minutes and the crowd had cleared before cops arrived. The spectacle was briefly interrupted and the mood dampened when the Christmas event turned somber as revelers looked on in shock.

A few hours earlier, Trejo was all summer smiles with teeth that gleamed as bright as the California rays. Quick to smile for selfies with the excitable Indian fans, why not? The incident puzzles us as much for its mood swing.

Trejo has not commented on the nature of the incident, but he posted a heartfelt instagram message just days after it occurred. His post which reminded the owners to take care of their pets from a fireworks show was particularly poignant given that his beloved chihuahua, Dixie (pictured above with Buccigross) had died just nine days earlier. An incontrovertibly different moment, this fact with an intrigue to the story about if maybe it was due to a possible emotional pain from losing.

It was a chilling reminder that even the smallest of celebrations can go sideways in an instant. The water balloon toss, and Trejo’s response to it are still being fleshed out. What remains for certain, however: Independence Day 2024 will not just be memorable in Los Angeles Fourth of July parade history books because of the flashy fireworks- but also Danny Trejo going from America to unforgettable holiday street fight.
