Quik got his start in the hip-hop scene selling homemade mix tapes. 1987 Profile Records spotted him and signed him to become the label’s first six-figure signee. He dropped the DJ part of his name for his rapping career and became known as Quik.
In 1992, Quik released his second album, Way 2 Fonky, which was certified Gold and contained the hits “Way 2 Fonky” and “Jus Lyke Compton.” In that particular year, he collaborated as a co-producer with Eazy-E on the first-ever rap duo Penthouse Players Clique album, aptly titled “Paid the Cost.”
1998 saw the release of Rhythm-al-ism, his fourth studio album. It featured the singles “Hand in Hand” and “You’z A Ganxta.” That same year he also produced the albums 2nd II None and El Debarge.

He continued to produce in the 2000s for artists such as Kurupt, Big Syke, and Janet Jackson. He also appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Made and made Truth Hurts’ only Top 10 pop hit “Addictive.” In 2003 Jay-Z commissioned Quik to work on The Black Album, while rapper Chingy worked with him on his Jackpot record.
In 2005, he started his new Mad Science Recordings label and released his independent album, Trauma. The project reflected the turmoil in his personal and musical life over the past few years. He then teamed up with a 74-piece orchestra for the music for the film Head of State.
After his stint with Profile Records, Quik would work with various other labels, including Interscope and Def Jam. He would collaborate with some artists, including Talib Kweli, Will Smith, and Shade Sheist. In addition to his production work, he has recorded three full-length studio albums and was a member of the group The Fixxers along with rappers AMG, EZ Roc, 8Ball & MJG, and Xzibit. He is collaborating with AMG on a solo album scheduled for release in the summer.
