It hurts me when I see my fellow Black people going through it. I’m the type of person that loves everybody and wants to see everybody win. So when I saw DJ Quik’s recent tweets about feeling like less of a producer, I felt his pain. But when he said he felt as if he was on the same level as fellow West Coast living legend, Dr. Dre left me puzzled.
Kept It Classy
When comparisons are brought up in the music industry, some people can’t help but get disrespectful. I appreciate that DJ Quik didn’t downplay or discredit Dr. Dre’s success to get his point across. If anything, everything that he was saying felt like it was coming from a place of love, and he was dealing with pent-up frustration.
If no one else will give DJ Quik his flowers, I will give them to him right now. Way 2 Fonkay is one of the most slept-on albums. It shows his duality to be an underrated lyricist and an amazing producer. Someone as talented as he shouldn’t be tripping about their legacy. If I’m being frank, he’s probably one of the few hip-hop acts that will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
To DJ Quik, this is my message to you. Comparison is the thief of joy. Sure, I could’ve said something cliche like “Everybody is a legend in their own right”, but I didn’t. DJ Quik is respected and appreciated by virtually everyone. Not trying to jinx it, but if he died tomorrow, we would remember him as a pioneer and trailblazer to West-coast hip-hop.
Nothing to Worry About
Sure, he’s not on the level as Dr. Dre and that’s okay. That guy is a living legend because he is in a league of his own. When it is all said and done, DJ Quik will go down as a West Coast Legend that didn’t get the credit he deserves.
