Hailey Bieber is going to sue TikTok and X users who have been spreading false rumors about her. Tired of constant misinformation, the model is going to take a firm stand against online defamation, which can set an example in the battle against fake news in the internet era.
Hailey Bieber has been at the center of online drama for years, and a section of social media users has painted her as a “bully” and “stalker.” Viral TikTok videos have accused her of imitating the style of Selena Gomez and even stalking Justin Bieber before their wedding. Such allegations, which have gone viral in recent weeks, have taken a toll on her public perception. Some of the allegations have been termed by her representatives as “doctored and manipulated to make Hailey look worse.”
Most recently, a seven-part YouTube series alleged Hailey was fixated on Justin Bieber’s past relationship with Selena Gomez. A viral TikTok also alleged she liked a post criticizing Gomez’s fiancé, Benny Blanco. While Hailey has largely ignored these rumors in the past, sources say her patience is running out, particularly now that she is a mother.
Hailey Bieber is said to be collaborating with lawyer Lisa Moore, the same lawyer who won Cardi B’s defamation lawsuit against YouTuber Tasha K. Cardi B’s suit, which concluded in a $4 million judgment, showed how effective litigation could be in holding online defamation to account. Moore’s background in handling celebrity defamation lawsuits makes her well-suited to Bieber’s team.
If Hailey goes through with the lawsuit, it could send a strong message that celebrities will not sit back and watch as they are defamed on social media. Her attorneys believe that a lot of the narrative being promoted is knowingly manipulated to mislead audiences, using viral moments to gain clicks and engagement at her expense.
This is not Hailey Bieber’s first experience in dealing with misinformation. In 2020, she and Justin Bieber threatened to sue a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon for making false statements that she had undergone cosmetic procedures. Their attorneys issued a cease-and-desist letter, accusing the surgeon of making false statements in an attempt to get business for his practice.
Celebrities fighting back against defamation online is the new normal. Cardi B’s suit against Tasha K was a textbook example, demonstrating that, yes, the courts do take seriously misinformation and character defamation. Other celebrities, such as Meghan Markle and Johnny Depp, have taken the same type of action to protect their reputations.
