Alex Choi, the easy-going and notorious car-modifying YouTuber well-known for crazy publicity-stunt driving, is in legal hot water after a recent stunt went wrong. While Choi enjoys a large following online for pushing the envelope, recently he was charged with federal offenses stemming from a dangerously close stunt he orchestrated involving his Lamborghini Huracan and fireworks.
This stunt entailed two women in a helicopter shooting fireworks at Choi’s Lamborghini as it was driven, and the whole thing was filmed and uploaded to the Interweb. The video soon stirred public outcry and caught the attention of law enforcement. A video from the scene shows the helicopter flying just above the car-dangerously close, some might say-and launching fireworks that many are calling “reckless” and “stupid.”

Choi was charged for the stunt which included violations of endangering public safety and violating regulations pertaining to air traffic but he was also now charged federally. Choi has faced several legal problems lately, and this incident is just the latest one. His Lamborghini was impounded after cops busted Kid on a misdemeanor charge of being uncooperative with police in a previous arrest in Beverly Hills. Elsewhere, Choi was one of the stars embroiled in a close-call with a motorcycle at the beginning of the year as he drifted on a public road, underscoring his repetitious dangerous antics.
This raises a larger conversation about the impact of social media stunts on public well-being, following Choi’s example. For years, experts and local law enforcement have warned of potential hazards involved with that behavior, not just for the participants, but also for witnesses as well as the public at large. Emily Harper, a public safety expert said:
“The potential devastation that stunts like these can cause is unimaginable. They both risk the lives of the subjects and the lives of the many others out around them. Social media influencers must come to terms with the gravity of their actions.
Choi is currently awaiting a court date for the federal charges related to the fireworks stunt. Some of the associated penalties would be in the form of hefty fines and maybe even incarceration, as per the judgement of the court. Many are watching this case as it is could become a standard for how other similar actions are treated going forward.
The outcome of Alex Choi’s legal troubles may also be quite the warning to any other social media influencers here; It also underscores why there should be increased oversight of the kinds of dangerous stunts people will perform for Internet fame. Only time will tell if warnings are enough to make influencers ensure safety comes before the sensationalism as authorities crackdown on the activity.
