A graduate student at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill once ate a weed brownie, and proceeded to have the worst night off her life, she said according to Vice.
“Ellie Reid”, a fake name Vice used for her professional reasons, had never suffered from anxiety or a panic attack, but that soon changed when she consumed marijuana for the first time.
Reid said to Vice she had no sense of time and was very shaky, experiencing what she called a out of body experience.
Consumed by one in eight Americans, marijuana typically relaxes you, but there are cases of people who fill up of paranoia as a result. Right here on your left we have exhibit A, Ms. Reid.
“Every minute felt like three hours,” Ms. Reid said to Vice. “I felt like I was trapped inside myself. I was sitting in a bathroom for a while, because I just felt so out of control and freaked out.”
As of 2017, there’s little to no research on the correlation between marijuana consumption, and the increased levels of anxiety.
But, in 2009, there was a study done that the two things Reid suffered from: anxiety and panic were symptoms closely associated with the consumption of marijuana.
“When talking about brain science and cannabis, it’s easy to be swept away by anecdotal evidence and sound bites,” Dr. Ruben Baler, a health scientist, said to Vice.
According to Dr. Baler, the brain is complex and differences in people’s brain chemistry could cause differences in how their mind and body respond to marijuana after consumption.
Marijuana consumption stimulates the endocannabinoid system (ECS), altering the consumer’s mind pertaining to: their response to reward, stress and/or emotions.
“What the ECS does is it optimizes our brain between excitation and inhibition,” Dr. Baler said to Vice.
But, THC, a chemical inside of marijuana, is the perpetual monkey wrench, one’s mind can no longer operate in synergy.
“You may not be able to keep those stimuli under control because your ECS is so out of whack because of all the THC in your system,” Dr. Baler said.
The more you know.
Bottom line, marijuana users, the next time you are high off your ass, maybe it’s not because the marijuana is laced with PHP, K2 or any other kind of chemical not supposed to be in your marijuana.
Non-marijuana users, maybe your opposition is warranted. And, maybe there needs to be a more in-depth part two of this article.
