Ice Spice went back to the Bronx to spread cheer and inspire young minds. In celebration of Girls Empowerment Day, in collaboration with the nonprofit BronxWorks, Ice Spice made some very special students in her hometown very happy. This event was for lifting the girls up and instilling community within them.
The star, 24 – real name Isis Naija Gaston – spent her day mingling with the students. From volleyball playing to photo ops, it was clear that Ice Spice is energy injected into whatever it is that these young folks surrounded themselves with. “Kids just love her. It’s so inspirational,” exclaimed another teacher as the halls ran riot with excitement.
Another highlight of the visit included a loud volleyball game that Ice Spice joined in with the students. Then, she sat down with the girls to talk about her journey from the Bronx to international stardom. “It’s amazing to see someone from here make it big and still care about us,” gushed one student after having taken a selfie with the rapper.
She grew up and was born within the Bronx, and with that came a huge contribution to Ice Spice’s rise in her music and the different ways her public persona reflects. This young rapper saw herself blow up in 2020; however, in 2022, her name went viral with her song “Munch (Feelin’ U)“. All that ICE SPICE gives off with authenticity and respect for the roots is already worth much in her hometown.
The visit spurred intense discussions on social media, with some questioning if she was a perfect role model for the students, though the whole vibe remained positive. Thus, some celebrated Spice online, known as “The Princess of Rap and of The Bronx,” for pouring out her support to youth back home.
“Seeing Ice Spice give back to where she started is so inspiring. That shows the kids that dreams do come true,” one parent noted on Instagram. Beyond the fun and excitement, deeper in the event was this message: no matter the background, you can be great and overcome. A visit by Ice Spice lit up the day for the students but sent out an important message regarding community engagement and role models that reflect resiliency and aspirations similar to those living in the Bronx.
