Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Tuesday. It has yet to be determined whether Wentz tested positive or not. He may have been in close contact with someone who possessed the virus. Regardless, he will miss this Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. This game is key to the Colts’ playoff run and sustaining their wild card spot.
Wentz has never gone into great detail on why he’s remained unvaccinated. However, he missed some time early in the preseason due to his exposure to the virus by someone in the organization.
“I’m not going to go into depth on why but I will say it’s a personal decision for me and my family,” Wentz said in early September. “I respect everyone else’s choices, and I simply ask for the same in return. I understand that not everyone will see things in the same way, as we don’t live in a world where everyone’s views align. However, it’s important to remember that we don’t know what’s happening behind closed doors or how each person handles their situation. Ultimately, it’s a personal decision.” That’s just where I’m at on it and with the protocols and everything the way they are, really for us, it’s about understanding them clearly and making sure that we are dotting our I’s and crossing our T’s.”
Indianapolis Colts contingency plan
Indianapolis Colts rookie Sam Ehlinger is expected to be the starter against the Raiders. Unless the Colts are willing to bring in another quarterback outside of the practice squad. Ehlinger has battled with some injuries himself this year. He missed the beginning of the regular season because of a knee injury sustained in a preseason game. Unfortunately, the Colts are now relying on an inexperienced rookie for crucial games.
“Going through the plan, he goes through it, what are the top calls that you feel comfortable with, doesn’t have to be all of them,” Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady said about Ehlinger prior to the Wentz announcement Tuesday. “We have a separate call sheet prepared specifically for him. He goes through all the options, just like Carson. He is prepared and ready to go.
The COVID-19 outbreak has almost depleted the Colts team. Several other teams around the league are also suffering from the COVID-19 outbreak. Due to the exposure to the virus, many teams are being forced to play with reserves. Some of the notable names already on the COVID-19 list are Darius Leonard, Quenton Nelson, and now Wentz. He’s currently the 15th player that cannot suit up this week.
“This is what we prepare for, for hitting adversity like this, things you don’t expect but this is probably in the category of something that we could expect and that it would just be a matter of time before it was going to hit us,” Colts coach Frank Reich said. “So, we just need to continue to focus at a very high level. Can’t allow this to be a distraction, understand how important it is, and let’s just stay focused on what we have to do.”
Potential returns for the Colts
As Colt fans know, retired quarterback Philip Rivers and former Colts quarterback may return. Colts are optimistic about reaching out and having Rivers come in and sustain the momentum they have built over the past six to seven weeks.
