The long-affiliated Chicago rapper, whose lyrics were anchored in telling stories from the expansive and untamed streets of Chicago and rallying the drill music scene, made considerable lifestyle changes that have proven inspirational to his audience. Most recently in the public eye, Durk has embraced a new positive path, shunned his gang life, and turned to Islam. In the process, this pivotal change has had a significant impression on his life, but more importantly not leaving aside his fans and followers, such as the gang members.
In his music and somewhat through his public pronouncements, Durk’s message is always to urge people to quit violence and embrace peace with each other and their own lives. He talked about recovering from addictions and striving to be a different man, good in fatherhood and leadership.
His latest hit single song “All My Life” with J. Cole typifies this transformation in that he wants support on his change of image, as well as that of others. Through this line, the lyrics of the song and what he tells the public border on developing another page in his life in that he is about not the past but moving forward into the better future that he aspires to. One powerful example of Durk’s influence is a gang member who, inspired by Durk’s journey, decided to leave the streets and turn his life over to God. This individual credited Durk for helping him see a different path, symbolically stating,
“Satan, you can’t have him,”
as he renounced his former life.

This transformation greatly vividly shows the effect Durk’s message produces on his listeners, motivating them to seek redemption and a more positive approach to living life. Durk is not only an influence in his music but also in his community work. Some of his community efforts include establishing a treatment facility in his hometown to help others suffering from addiction. All of this work is in pursuit of Durk’s overall goal to help diminish violence and push for a change for the better in the city of Chicago.
