The much-hyped battle of YouTuber-turned-boxer 27-year-old Jake Paul versus 58-year-old former-heavyweight title holder Mike Tyson finally went down on November 15, 2024, at Arlington, Texas’ AT&T Stadium. Sanctioned by the World Boxing Council, eight two-minute rounds were held using 14-ounce gloves, and were live-streamed around the globe on Netflix, making history in terms of television coverage of boxing.
Before the fight, Paul generated controversy on a live stream session with Adin Ross, where he deceitfully claimed that Tyson had Parkinson’s disease but had been cured after using toad venom. Paul later toned down his statements, indicating that Tyson is free of Parkinson’s but had indeed used toad venom, which contains 5-MeO-DMT, to alleviate pain, something Tyson had previously confirmed on using the hallucinatory substance.
With a combined ticket value of nearly $80 million, the fight shattered previous Texas combat sport attendance records, outdoing Canelo Alvarez’s $9 million live gate. Prices ranged from $49 to $50,000, but there was also a VIP package costing $2 million that set the most expensive ticket price in boxing history. Netflix’s live-streaming venture into boxing went very well, bringing together millions of fans worldwide. The fight represented possibly a shift of trend away from previous pay-per-view (PPV) business, paving the way to possibilities of sporting streams of today’s era.
Despite its success, there had been criticism on allegations that there had been a limiting contract clause on Tyson’s performance that had generated speculation that the fight had been pre-arranged. The allegations were strenuously denied by each of the fighters and representatives, including Paul labeling it as “one of the toughest of my career.”
In the musical circle, fans were devastated after Shakira had to undergo hospitalization due to abdominal complications, leading her concert that had been scheduled in Lima, Peru, to be cancelled.
Shakira was taken to the emergency room on Sunday evening, and her physicians warned her against singing that night. She announced on social media that evening that she had had to postpone, regretfully, owing to her health issues.
This setback also hit her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran worldwide tour, launching in February of that year in Rio de Janeiro promoting her Grammy Award-winning album.
