Janet Jackson, one of the world’s most celebrated entertainers, is preparing to chronicle her upcoming tour for her documentary family first. The follow-up to last year’s hit doc, which ranked as cable’s top documentary of 2022 and saw 21 million viewers, will chronicle her tour and her efforts to reunite the Jackson family band.
Janet Jackson’s ‘Together Again’ Tour Is Being Documented for a Follow-Up Documentary
The acclaimed Lifetime documentary Janet Jackson, which aired last year and ranked as cable’s #1 documentary of the year, is getting a sequel. The network and A+E Networks greenlit a second doc on the pop star, entitled Family First, which will follow her 2023 Together Again tour and her quest to reunite the Jackson family band after 40 years.
In the new doc, which is directed by Ben Hirsch and produced for Lifetime and A&E by Workerbee, Jackson will tell her story in her own words. She’ll also be joined by her brother Randy, who will serve as an executive producer.
Despite her public persona, Jackson has a deeply private, loving relationship with her family. Her parents adore her, her siblings are proud of her and she’s a mother figure for her children.
She’s a multi-platinum singer, songwriter, actress and producer who is known for her innovative, socially conscious music, elaborate stage shows and dance routines. Infused with the creative genius of record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, her musical partnerships seamlessly blended the rich essences of rhythm and blues, funk, disco, and rap, culminating in her remarkable journey across genres and resounding crossover triumphs.
Since her debut album in 1981, she’s been a major influence on the music industry. She’s earned four top-five singles and eight top-ten hits, including “Nasty,” which was her first number one song.
Her two most popular albums, Control (1986) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989), were both certified platinum by the RIAA. She won four Grammy Awards and has sold over 100 million records.
In addition to her music career, Jackson has also made a name for herself as a philanthropist. She has raised over $11 million for causes like amfAR and the Children’s Miracle Network.
She’s currently on tour, kicking off April 14 in Hollywood, Florida, and will end at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on June 21. She’s also celebrating her 50th anniversary in entertainment, as well as the 25th and 30th anniversaries of her two biggest albums, The Velvet Rope and janet.

The music icon has a film crew on hand for her upcoming tour, and she’s also gearing up to chronicle her family’s history with a documentary. Her second film, Janet Jackson: Family First, will follow her on her upcoming tour and explore her efforts to reunite the Jackson family band after 40 years, according to Rolling Stone magazine.
The news comes after Lifetime and A&E announced Wednesday that they’re greenlighting a follow-up to last year’s “Janet Jackson” documentary, which brought in 21 million viewers across the networks. It will focus on the artist’s upcoming “Together Again” tour, as well as her collaboration with her brother Randy to reunite the band after four decades.
It’s the first time the group has ever been documented in a feature documentary, and they’re set to debut their story in June. The two-hour special, titled TLC Forever, will be directed by Matthew Kay.
Featuring T-Boz, Chilli and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez, TLC is the top-selling female act of all time with nine Billboard hits and five Grammys to their name. They are also known for their elaborate stage shows and socially conscious lyrics.
In a recent interview, Jackson said she has new music in the works and will be embarking on her first tour since 2013 this spring. She hasn’t shared any details yet but she told Today that her fans have been waiting for new music.
Jackson is also making waves this year with her Las Vegas residency, “Metamorphosis,” which closed out to record-breaking ticket sales this past December. She was recently ranked among the biggest Vegas acts of the decade, ahead of Celine Dion and Britney Spears.
The singer’s upcoming concert tour will be a celebration of her fifth decade in entertainment, and she’ll be performing songs from 1997’s “The Velvet Rope” and 1993’s “Janet,” alongside her best-known hits. Her latest single, “Made for Now,” featuring Daddy Yankee, hit #1 on the Dance Clubs Songs chart.
