At Governors Ball this year, it was not all about the dancey beats or the headliners. And it became a canvas to broadcast the beautiful pictures of friendship between two emerging young stars. Joey King, the actress who exhibits comedic timing in The Kissing Booth and dramatic chops in The Act, teared up (from at least one eye) during what, from the sound of things, looked like a show stopping performance, and so forth.
King, also a talent, (with an Emmy nom of her own) wasn’t about to bump her from the spotlight. She ended up in the mesmerized audience instead, charmed by Carpenter’s musical chops. The singer-songwriter, who also has a pretty solid music career, played a set that reportedly blew the audience and her BFF away.
Joey King tells @People she cried after watching Sabrina Carpenter’s Gov Ball set:
“I literally was sobbing after the show. I was like so proud of her…I just can’t stop singing ‘Please Please Please.’ It’s so rude of her to make a hit like that.” pic.twitter.com/cy35hsoOrg

Her voice full of emotion, King said in a post-festival interview that seeing Sabrina up there “just made me so proud.” She is incredibly talented, and having the chance to watch her pour her heart out onto the stage, was something so unique and extraordinary. I had to choke back a few happy tears.
This emotional moment rose above the typical pageantry of a music festival. I saw a bit of the real support that lives amongst the competition and ego that often runs rampant in the entertainment industry. Unfiltered, upstaged, and unscripted, King’s reaction captured the raw camaraderie at play between these young stars.
Whether Carpenter’s performance details or King’s tearful moment will be shared with us is still a mystery; however, the flood of honest emotion was all that was needed to ensure fans and those industry insiders were just as affected by the vulnerable display. It was more than just a display of skill, it was a testament to a connection formed by vision and bound by respect.
But while these astute fans sift through the moment, searching for an explanation for this pure, sweet, moment of love, one thing is certain: Joey King did not cry at Gov Ball for no reason, folks. It was also a lovely reminder of the significance of supporting each others’ successes, something particularly poignant in such fickle industry requirements regarding what is the next major shake-up. And in the universe of accomplishments, King’s moment of pure joy, that which has not been dictated, was all the more a testament to the force of true friendship.
