The R&B genre is thriving more than ever in 2021. With artists such as SZA, HER, and Jhené Aiko leading the pack, there is a new wave of talent being ushered in. One rising star who is destined to become a household name is Los Angeles based songbird Joyce Wrice. Wrice has officially released her highly anticipated Overgrown album giving fans a special offering of melodic Hip Hop flows.
You can expect features from Freddie Gibbs, Lucky Daye, Kaytranada, Masego, Westside Gunn, Devin Morrison, UMI and frequent collaborator Mndsgn.
Growing up in Los Angeles Joyce Wrice has earned her respect in the industry by collaborating with Cali artists such as Dom Kennedy, Lucky Daye and SiR. After graduating Soka University of America with a degree in Liberal Arts, Wrice decided to pursue music full time.
Her first commercial record “Ain’t No Need” broke onto the scene in 2015 produced by Mndsgn and DJ Harrison. Her hard work paid off a year alter when she released her 2016 debut EP, Stay Around, with collaborations with SiR, Mndsgn, J. LBS, and Chuk de la Garcon.
With the backing of her city and play makers in the industry, her new EP Overgrown is right on time. Filled with Hip Hop cadences over serenity vocals, Joyce Wrice has created a masterpiece. You will hear the Los Angeles native discussing topics such as falling in love, heartbreak, and being addicted to someone’s mental and physical energy. She serves up the perfect balance of sexy, lyrically driven content and concise storytelling like a true student of music should.
This project opens up with a soulful, wavy track titled “Chandler” that showcases her serene vocals in a sonically pleasing way. This tracks sets the tone for the rest of this release, that is heartfelt and authentic. One single that standouts the most is track 3 titled “On One”. Featuring Indiana breakout artist Freddie Gibbs, this song is nothing less than a hit. From the superb production, to the catchy hook, Gibbs added verse is the perfect contrast to Wrice’s thriving sound.
His deep tone of voice gives this record a more Hip Hop edge like when J.LO collaborated with Ja Rule for “I’m Real”. As she concludes her project with the album titled track “Overgrown” her growth and prosperity as a rising R&B star is prevalent.
