The mastermind of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige, shared his opinion about the future of Hugh Jackman’s ”Wolverine” in his recent interview with Empire. Feige confessed that he was incredibly touched by 2017’s Logan, in which Jackman played the mutant hero for the last time. The MCU chief noted, “You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That’s not something we should undo.”

While “Logan” fans ought to be happy with the overall preservation of the film’s narrative, some may object to “Deadpool & Wolverine” affecting Logan’s legacy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the pace of events in “Deadpool & Wolverine” is sufficiently far in the future that “Logan’s” reputation remains intact. The incorporation of the next film into the MCU did not compromise the independence of Logan.
Hugh Jackman debuted as Wolverine in “X-Men” in 2000 and has appeared in many X-Men sequels and two solo films over the next 17 years. In the film “Logan,” directed by James Mangold, Logan is older and older, providing Hugh Jackman and his legions of admirers a fitting bow and a proper farewell.
Most comic book fans shared Feige’s initial skepticism about bringing Jackman back as Wolverine since “Logan” sounded like the finale of the character’s time in the X-Men canon . Still, the chance to co-star with Reynolds as Deadpool was too appealing for Jackman to resist . This means the Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine” will not be the same character we have grown to love across Jackman’s films, giving the MCU ample room to keep “Logan” the flawless goodbye it always has and still thrilling fans one more time with the gleeful specter of the clawed mutant.
Nevertheless, when the occasion presented itself, he would not turn down the chance to collaborate with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. The Hollywood Actor says,
“I was about an hour in when that question came into my head: What do I want to do? And the moment I said that question in my head, I realized I wanted to make this movie, Deadpool & Wolverine. I was a good distance down the M1 from London, and I kept driving. I couldn’t get it out of my head. After another hour, I stopped. I rang him up; I said, Ryan, I’m in. If you will have me, I’m in.”
Feige clarified that Reynolds’ third Deadpool movie’s Wolverine character wouldn’t be the same as the character fans adored from Jackman’s previous 20 Century Fox X-Men films. In doing so, the MCU will ideally be able to preserve the original Logan’s legacy while still giving the audience one incredible adventure with the clawed mutant they know and love.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” will be shown in theaters on July 26, 2024, with both title characters joining the MCU. If you intend to watch this summer, no additional action is necessary. Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld, for example, has praised the film, describing it as having “the finest action scenes in the MCU.”
