Megan Thee Stallion has finally spoken to Billboard about her ever-changing relationship with Nicki Minaj. Undoubtedly, there have been ups and downs between them in the past, but Megan is excited about what’s to come next. This go-round, it’s all about the music, growth, and pleasing the fans. As Megan puts it, strong lyrical delivery and keeping her fanbase pleased mean everything.

The moments between Megan and Nicki were not always strained. In 2019, the two collaborated on the chart-topping “Hot Girl Summer.” The song-turned-anthem to women’s empowerment reached as high as No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its listeners loved how incredibly smooth the chemistry was between the two artists. Megan had made it clear that she drew inspiration from Nicki, referring to herself as a “Barb” since ’08. This admiration further created a very organic partnership that seemed unstoppable.
But things went left in 2020 when Megan teamed up with Nicki’s enemy, Cardi B, for the No. 1 hit song “WAP.” While Megan never said that was the reason for a falling out between the two, rumors of an issue between them begain to swirl. In 2021, people noticed Nicki wasn’t following Megan on Instagram anymore, and not long after that, Megan returned the favor. From there, their friendship would appear, at least publicly, to freeze up.
Things reached a boiling point in early 2024 when Megan dropped her diss track “Hiss,” which fans believed targeted Nicki and her husband, Kenneth Petty. Nicki then dropped her single entitled “Big Foot,” which many took as a direct murder shot at Megan. The feud spilled onto the socials, where frustrations were made on both sides of the artists. The public back-and-forth kept fans abuzz, each taking up for their favorite rapper.
With all the theatrics, Megan never strayed away from her music. She told Billboard that she was confused by what caused their fight, saying,
“I still don’t know what the problem is. To this day, I don’t know what could be reconciled because I don’t know what the issue was in the first place.”
Megan stated that, more than anything else, her aim is to deliver music that speaks to her fans above everything else. She is known for having some of the boldest, most straightforward lyrics, all mixed with a strong presence, and she shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. In the interview conducted by Billboard, she accentuated the need to be consistent with her craft; whatever energy she puts into her songs is from the commitment she has towards her audience.
“If people feel like I’m someone to aim at, that means I’m doing something right,” she said with a smile. “I want my music to speak for itself. At the end of the day, it’s about connecting with my fans and giving them the best I’ve got.”
For Megan, part of that’s a connection with challenging herself creatively, be it in songwriting or otherwise. Whether it’s some irrational, fun summer anthem or a personal track, she knows her fans appreciate honesty. That authenticity has kept her career flying, even when she has been at the center of controversies.
While Megan seems game to move on, precisely how that highway to reconciliation with Nicki is not exactly clear. Megan’s words said it all that she doesn’t want to dwell on the drama anymore but instead wants to get back to the music.
“I’m all about female artists supporting each other,” she shared. “At the end of the day, there’s enough room for everyone to shine. I just want us all to win.”
Fans are hopeful that the two rap queens will eventually come to a common understanding and, who knows, even collaborate once in a while. For now, though, Megan is focusing on her journey and making music that matters. Whether the feud gets put to bed or not, one thing is for certain: Megan Thee Stallion’s star continues to rise.
