More Than 3,000 New Jersey Patients Could Have HIV

A surgery center in New Jersey could have infected more than 3,000 New Jersey patients with HIV, and other diseases.

Health officials say that the staff at HealthPlus Surgery Center in Saddle Brook, New Jersey, failed to meet proper sterilization procedures, infection control planning and procedures, and dispensing and storing medication properly. Now more than 3,000 letters have gone home to patients who visited between Jan. 1 and Sept. 7, 2018.

It’s possible those patients, who visited in between that time, could have bloodborne illnesses like HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. In the letters sent out to patients, the center urges them to come to get tested.

“Knowing if you have hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV is important because there are medicines, treatments, and other things that people with these infections can do to protect their health. You can be infected   diseases and not feel sick at all. It is important that you get tested, even if you do not remember feeling sick. The tests are a simple blood test. All of us at HealthPlus understand this may be upsetting. We want to assure you that we will assist you during this process, including paying for all medical costs associated with testing. We recommend that you get tested as soon as possible.”

Despite the risk, the New Jersey Department of Health and HealthPlus suspects the chances of infection to be low. So far, there have been no reports of infection or illness. But if you recall, we had the HIV killing drug since 1998. So, what’s going on?

Sheesh, what a story. We’d love to know your thoughts?
