Gaulden’s legal troubles began when he was involved in a 2016 shootout that ended with him being convicted of a felony. This prior conviction is most significant for firearm charges, as federal law doesn’t allow the possession or ownership of firearms by convicted felons. None of these charges can be taken lightly since each has up to a 10-year prison sentence.
At the time, Gaulden was booked on several felony charges stemming from the 2020 arrest. However, his legal team finally found some success in getting one of the charges dismissed. Possession of firearms by a convicted felon remains the most serious charge pending, notwithstanding this small victory. The case took an important turn recently: Gaulden’s legal team finally decided to strategically move the case from Louisiana to Utah.
This move is all the more noteworthy because Gaulden already has charges pending in Utah over an alleged prescription drug fraud ring. The decision to move the case can only be a strategic move on the part of Gaulden’s defense team, wanting better grounds. The possible result still remains the same: it may mean a decade behind prison bars if convicted. Therefore, court proceedings scheduled for the following days will be critical to determine Gaulden’s legal fate and professional future.
