According to ESPN, the New York Giants’ general manager, Joe Schoen, has not reached out to any other teams regarding star running back Saquan Barkley. Schoen’s words may have been scrutinized at the combine that alarmed many fans around the league. The words hinted toward an open mind or willingness to openly trade Barkley. However, Schoen meant if teams came looking he would entertain the idea, however, he’d never initiate the trade discussions. The Giants were attempting to move close to $40 million in cap space in order to free up future options down the road.
Schoen clarified that his comments about Saquon Barkley were taken out of context at the combine. He stated that he hasn’t contacted any team about trading the running back. “After the combine, there was a lot of speculation. I mentioned that I would be open to listening if teams inquired about any players.” I have a responsibility to consider options, but that doesn’t mean I’ll accept every deal. I haven’t contacted any team regarding Saquon Barkley.
“I’ve received calls about some of our players. There have been a couple of teams reaching out about him, but I’m not actively trying to trade Saquon Barkley.”
New York Giants’ relationship with Barkley
Barkley was chosen as the second pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Penn State University product won Offensive Rookie of the Year after rushing for over 2,000 yards in his debut season. However, due to injuries, he’s never been able to play long enough to replicate his rookie season. He’s dealt with high ankle sprains in 2019 and 2020. Not to mention, he’s torn his ACL within this past season, as well. In the three years combined, he’s rushed for 2,391 yards since his breakout rookie season, reported ESPN.
t seems the Giants will hang on to Barkley for the foreseeable future. They believe he can still produce at a high level. However, there have been stranger things to happen in the NFL. IN so many words, one shouldn’t be surprised if Barkley is traded for the right assets in return. Barkley is guaranteed $7.2 million this season on the fifth-year option, per ESPN.
I won’t make those statements about Bradberry or anyone else. Some players have received calls because they hold value. Bradberry remains a top-notch starting corner.
