New York Giants Hire Buffalo Bills Joe Schoen As Their GM

The New York Giants have brought on Joe Schoen, a Buffalo Bills assistant general manager (GM), following the retirement of their former GM, Dave Gettleman. Gettleman retired last week after a four-year tenure that produced a grand total of 19 wins and 46 losses, per ESPN. Schoen becomes the Giants’ fifth GM in the past 41 years.

It seems Schoen’s first responsibility may be to find a head coach that will replace Joe Judge. Judge was also released last week just after two seasons with the New York Giants. The releasing of another coach just after two seasons or less makes Judge the third straight coach. Judge’s last memory he left Giants fans with was a 4-13 2021 campaign.

“Now, the work begins,” Schoen said in a statement. “My main priority is to hire a head coach, and together we will establish a harmonious environment for our football operations.”

New York Giants prioritize finding a head coach

The Giants appear to be zeroing in on Brian Flores, the ex-Miami Dolphins head coach, for the vacant position, as reported by Adam Schefter. Flores’ first choice of jobs would be the Giants because of his history with the city of New York. He was born in Brooklyn and it would feel like a homecoming for him. Flores has already interviewed with the Houston Texans and the Chicago Bears.

Giants are expected to request permission to speak with former Dolphins' HC Brian Flores for their HC position, per sources.

Flores is from Brooklyn and Giants would represent a homecoming.

Giants also expected to speak with Dan Quinn and Brian Daboll, amongst others.

Although Flores seems to be the front runner. Schoen and the New York Giants front office doesn’t want to put all their eggs in one basket. The Giants are also expecting to interview with the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, per ESPN.

Schoen is set to fix a franchise that’s tied for the worst record, 22-59, over the past five seasons alongside the New York Jets. The ownership is being very lenient with Schoen as they understand he wasn’t left with much to build off. Schoen worked closely with the Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane as they built the Buffalo Bills into a powerhouse. The Bills have reclaimed the AFC East for the second consecutive year. Not to mention, in the Divisional Round of the playoffs the Bills are taking on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Schoen’s background

Schoen’s career began in 2000 as an intern in the Carolina Panthers’ ticket department. He worked his way up the ladder from the point forward. Schoen began spending time with personnel from the Panthers, Dolphins, and Bills. He advanced to the position of player personnel director with the Dolphins under Bill Parcells. Schoen later rejoined with Beane in Buffalo, his former co-worker in Carolina.

Schoen is big on analytics and he works extenivesly with personnel and football operations. He’s been described by co-workers as someone who “never stops working”. These are all good signs as the New York Giants begin to try and rebuild their franchise back to respectability.
