One of Youtube’s biggest stars, Nikkie de Jager a.k.a. ‘NikkieTutorials’, recently posted a different kind of video to her makeup and review channel earlier this week.
In her video titled ‘I’m Coming Out.’, de Jager reveals to her 12-million-plus subscribers that she is a transgender woman.
“It feels good to finally do it. It is time to let go and be truly free,” she said in the 17-minute video.
The makeup guru says that she began the transition process at a very young age with the support of her mother and by 19 she fully transitioned.
Since the revelation, de Jager has received a lot of love from the makeup community and beauty world … but that goes without saying, there’s always going to be haters.
Too Faced, a brand de Jager regularly collabs with, announced in a statement on Twitter that co-founder Jerrod Blandino has fired his own sister from the company for allegedly making transphobic remarks following the coming out video.
Regardless, much respect to Nikkie for having the strength to tell her story to 12-million-plus people all at once.
Ever since Caitlyn Jenner first came out in 2015, a train seemed to follow and now we’re seeing more trans people in the spotlight than ever before.
Let’s not forget about:
Laverne Cox
The Orange Is the New Black star was the first openly transgender person to ever be nominated for an Emmy in any acting category + she was out way before Cate!
Hunter Schafer
Just like her character, Jules, on the popular HBO series, Euphoria, Schafer is trans and speaks on it often and openly.
Janet Mock
Mock is the former editor for People Magazine and is currently a contributing editor for Marie Claire. Her 2014 memoir, Redefining Realness, topped the New York Times bestsellers list.
Public acknowledgment of gender identity is important for those feeling out of place and especially for youths. Let’s be more progressive in 2020!
