Poland is an essential ally of Ukraine. They provide arms and logistical support to help fend off Russia’s invasion. The Polish government recently ramped up nationalistic rhetoric ahead of elections next month.
Poland Stops Supporting Ukraine With Weapons
This raises fears that Warsaw’s full-throated support for Ukraine might be waning. A row over grain exports has seen Poland ban Ukrainian goods to protect its farmers. It says it’s a legitimate move under World Trade Organisation rules.
This has angered Kyiv, which has referred the matter to the WTO. The row also prompted Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. They warned that Poland would stop supplying weapons to Ukraine before walking back the statement.
This raised concerns among NATO allies. He added that a NATO and US hub in the city of Rzeszow used to transport weapons into Ukraine would not be affected. Morawiecki’s comments were still troubling for Ukraine.
He is one of the chief advocates of military aid. This is all according to Michal Baranowski. Baranowski is the managing director of Warsaw-based GMF East and part of the German Marshall Fund.
He argues that Warsaw’s decision is likely motivated by the election campaign. Poland will continue to carry out previously agreed supplies of ammunition and armaments. In addition to arms, Poland supplied trucks, armored vehicles, and aircraft to Ukraine.
Moreover, a stop in arms supply would allow Russian and far-right forces to gain more ground in eastern Ukraine. Also, increase the risks of a conflict that would be a “grave violation” of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the ministry said.
The move may also hurt Poland as it tries to woo back voters from the far-right. This gained popularity amid corruption scandals involving the ruling Law and Justice Party.
