Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Announce they are stepping down from their royal duties!
2019 has been a roller coaster ride for the Dutch and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle. Ever since their nuptials in May 2018, Harry and Meghan have been scrutinized for their non-traditional behavior. The decision to step down from their royal duties seems to be a direct result of facing such scrutiny.
The couple announced their decision via Instagram a day before their sister in Law, Kate Middelton’s 38th birthday. In their statement, the couple stated: “After many months of reflection and internal discussion, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
Rumors had been swirling all year the newlyweds were unhappy with their role within the royal family especially Meghan.
The British media has bashed both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for how they have interacted with the press. The pressure of having their every move watched and judged prove to be too much the Millenials.
In their statement, the couple expressed they will be spittling their time between the UK and North America. Sources close to the couple have said that Canada is the North American destination they are referring to.
No one in the royal family is happy with the announcement especially the Queen. Allegedly the matriarch of the family had asked Harry to hold off on the announcement for a while but he obviously didn’t listen.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace alluded to the possibility that the Dutch and Duchess decision wasn’t as final as they made it seem. Whatever the final outcome is, don’t expect the royals to relinquish all of their benefits. In their statement, the couple expressed the desire to become financially independent. However, according to CNN, they will only be giving up 5% of their royal income.
It will be interesting to see how this drama within the royal family plays out. Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fully remove themselves from “royal duties”? Will, they continue to receive support from Harry’s dad and British taxpayers? Time will tell.
