Robert Downey Jr. is making a grand return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However this time, instead of the Iron Man Suit, he was seen in sinister attire like Doctor Doom’s cloak for the forthcoming movie “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Joe and Anthony Russo, the Russo brothers, have adapted “Avengers: Doomsday” onto the silver screen with jaw-dropping action sequences and a new, formidable villain, Victor von Doom, otherwise known as Doctor Doom. The directing team from the blockbuster originals, such as “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” takes another return, drenching their style into this so-anticipated movie. And fans will be thrilled to know that another future Marvel film, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” will also be directed by the Russos.
The announcement of Downey’s casting came in nothing short of spectacular style. At the Comic-Con Convention in San Diego, he once made a mesmerizing first appearance—concealed by Doctor Doom‘s iconic mask and shrouded in a green robe. The suspense killed fans as they awaited the big reveal. And then, in a moment forever etched in our minds, Downey revealed himself to that ecstatic audience. From ecstatic to utterly disappointed, the reaction has ranged between those fans over the moon about casting and others hoping for a fresh face to take on the role. But then again, you can’t please everyone.

Asked about his new role, Downey really couldn’t contain the excitement. Appearing at San Diego Comic-Con, he quipped, “New mask, same task. What can I tell you? I like playing complicated characters.” And Doctor Doom certainly fits! Downey showed interest in digging deep into the complexities of such a multidimensional character—full of colorful and intricate personality that calls for great depth and nuance.
Downey’s journey as Tony Stark started in 2008, with the release of “Iron Man.” This marked the beginning of the start of the MCU. He had played Tony Stark/Iron Man across ten Marvel movies—fond memories of his performances in “The Avengers,” “Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” not to mention the emotional scenes from “Avengers: Endgame.” In “Endgame,” as the world saw for itself, Iron Man died—and this was a moment promised by the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, that would be left intact.
Now, with Downey due to make his MCU return, fans were salivating over how he was going to bring Doctor Doom to life. Speaking in a recent interview with Esquire magazine—in the wake of his Oscar win for “Oppenheimer”—Downey spoke about the almost palpable excitement felt over his return to the Marvel fold. He’ll gladly return.
“It is far too engrained in my DNA. That part picked me. And as I say, ‘Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.’ It’s a losing bet. He is the house. He will always win.”
The casting has generated significant buzz among Marvel fans. Some are excited to see Downey back on board this time as a bad guy, while others wonder how he is going to separate Doctor Doom from the very familiar Tony Stark. The hype is real, as most people just can’t wait to see Downey‘s new dynamic onscreen.
