Thanksgiving Might Have to Go On Hold Due to Salmonella Outbreak

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has recalled turkey products, linked to a salmonella outbreak.

    Yikes!

There have been 91,388 pounds of ground turkey products recalled. Test results, showing positive results for the outbreak strain were found in the Jennie-O brand. There have been at least 164 reported cases of people getting sick from 35 states. Only one death has been reported.

The first initial alert came in November 2017, but it’s was unclear of where the outbreak started. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people take precaution. Suggested methods of precaution are as follows: wash hands before and after handling raw turkey, cook products thoroughly, and thaw turkey in the refrigerator. According to statistics, there are 1.2 million cases of salmonella related sickness in the US each year.

The test results came from a sample dating back to September 11, 2018. Members of the USDA, say products have already been shipped nationwide. Lab tests indicate the infection can be found in live turkeys and pet food.
