Selena Gomez Reveals She Can’t Have Children Due to Medical Conditions

In a heartfelt interview, Selena Gomez let loose on a part of her life that not many fans have known. The pop singer and actress said her desire to be a mother blossoms when faced with medical obstacles. Though Gomez is very optimistic about her future, she spoke candidly about the emotional journey she’s endured over the years regarding carrying children.

In the cover story published on September 9, Gomez was candid about her relationship with music producer Blanco and their shared desire to have children. But becoming a mother won’t look exactly like everyone else’s.

“I haven’t ever said this,” revealed Gomez. “But I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and that of the baby in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

This candid admission comes in light of her long battle with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease she has been fighting since 2014. Lupus, which causes the body’s immune system to attack its tissues, has already led Gomez through a series of challenging health crises that include chemotherapy to a kidney transplant as far back as 2017. These lifesaving treatments have taken away the likelihood of carrying a child.

In her documentary My Mind and Me, Gomez has spoken candidly about her struggle with bipolar disorder. These experiences have shaped her perspective on life, love, and motherhood.

Gomez seemed to reflect upon motherhood during a 2022 conversation with Rolling Stone. She remembered heartaches, one of which came after she saw a friend struggle to conceive.

“That’s a very big, big present thing in my life,” she said, coming across with the depth of how strong the emotional burden is that arises with her situation. “How ever I’m meant to have them, I will,” she said.

Not carrying her children was encased in a wave of reflection and mourning for Selena Gomez. Growing up with traditional ideas about motherhood, this reality forces her to face a different future from the one she had envisioned.

“It’s hard when you have this image in your mind of what life will be like, and then suddenly that image shifts,” she said. “But I’ve learned that I still have options.”

She added that surrogacy and adoption are options she is seriously considering. In fact, to Gomez, it is not about the biological aspect of motherhood.

“At the end of the day, I don’t really care,” she confidently said. “It’ll be my baby. That’s what matters.”

This personal journey has been tough, but so far, Selena Gomez seems resilient, greatly because of her need to focus on her music and acting career and fight for mental health awareness. Several years back, her lyrics alone could always resonate in raw vulnerability with her listeners, and such a situation has only drummed deeper into those who look up to her for inspiration.

“I had to grieve a lot before I could even write about it,” she said in the interview. “But once I did, I knew my fans would get it. They’ve been with me through every stage of my life, and I wanted to give them something real.”

This is why Gomez’s fanbase continues to be as devoted as ever. She is one of those who embraces her flaws and turns them into strengths with her art.

Currently, Gomez is in a loving relationship with a music producer named Benny Blanco, whom she describes as “a light” in her life.

“I’ve ever been loved this way,” she shared, emphasizing that bond. While they continue going through their love life, Gomez clearly has no plans to change her last name, firmly saying, “I am Selena Gomez. That’s it.”

Gomez has stars aligning in front of her on several fronts. She just entered the billionaire club from her successful makeup line, among other investments. She’s also getting critical acclaim for her latest series, Only Murders in the Building, in which she has been nominated in the best actress in a comedy category for her Emmy. Meanwhile, her new film, Emilia Perez, will be released on Netflix after creating some buzz at the Cannes Film Festival.

Still, amid her busy schedule, Gomez made it a point to declare that her relationships remain on top of her list.

“Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, except for a few dates here and there,” she revealed. “And I was like, ‘OK, if this is the vibe, then what is the most important thing to me? Family.'”

Selena Gomez’s health battles have also not been limited to lupus. Besides the physical toll lupus takes, she has made very public her mental health diagnosis, including bipolar disorder. These experiences have made her even more vocal about the importance of mental health care-something she advocates for tirelessly.

She says that this life journey, with all its physical and emotional setbacks, has been manageable because of therapy and continuing mental health treatment. She says in her message to others dealing with similar struggles as clearly as possible: seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

“I wish more people would talk about therapy,” Gomez said, “it’s changed my life and I think it can change other people’s lives too.”

Indeed, her interest in mental health led her to co-found Wondermind, a digital platform meant to break the stigma associated with talking about one’s mental health.

Yet, through it all, Selena Gomez continued to push her way up, using her platform to tell her story of inspiration. From deeply personal health challenges to an artistic evolution, more than a celebrity, Gomez proves to be a role model in resilience. Taking those hardships and making something beautiful out of them, either through her music or advocacy, is just what has made her journey so special.

Selena Gomez looks forward to the future in every domain of her personal and professional life. Some of her health problems have changed the direction toward motherhood, but they didn’t make her wish any less to be a mom. “I don’t know what it’ll look like, but I know I will get there,” she smiled.
